Unite for Gender Justice!

We are at a crucial point in our democracy. The approaching 2022 midterm elections are shaping up to be some of the most consequential in history for gender justice.

Women — especially Black, Latina, Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander, and Indigenous women — have shouldered the dual crises of the COVID-19 public health crisis and the economic recession it triggered. For nearly three years, we have shown up for our country as essential frontline workers across industries, particularly in the health care, food service, education and child care sectors. We also showed up as a critical voting bloc in 2020, both as the workers and consumers powering our economy, as well as the community leaders powering our institutions. And we continue to show up in the streets and on the steps of courthouses to defend our basic rights to freedom and equality.

Accountability Campaign Around Women’s Agenda

Today, the National Partnership Action Fund announced that it is launching a campaign effort to ensure that the agenda that women and families voted for in the past election is carried out by policy makers. Recent polling has shown that paid family and medical leave is one of, if not the most, popular elements of any plan to help our economy rebuild amidst an ongoing pandemic. Women in particular have borne the brunt of the pandemic, with 3 million leaving the workforce, with one of the core reasons being a lack of ability to take leave to care for themselves and others. Yet the past few weeks have shown that women are still having to fight to be heard in the broader agenda.

“It is unacceptable that in 2018 millions of working people are forced to choose between economic security and their health or the health of a loved one, but Tuesday’s results provide more evidence that paid family and medical leave is a winning issue,” said Debra L. Ness, president of the Action Fund.

It is past time for lawmakers to catch up to the public’s needs and demands and pass a comprehensive paid family and medical leave policy like the FAMILY Act.”
