National Partnership Action Fund Endorses Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States
/Statement from National Partnership for Women & Families Action Fund President Jocelyn Frye
Washington, DC,-- This weekend we learned that President Joe Biden will end his campaign for the presidency. President Biden has served our country with dignity, compassion, and an unflinching commitment to lifting up all people. He led us out of the pandemic, bolstered our economy, and made unprecedented investments in care, jobs, and families. He deserves our thanks and deep appreciation.
President Biden has voiced his support for Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for President. This is an historic moment for our nation, marking the first time a woman of color is poised to become the likely nominee for one of the two major political parties. The Vice President has been instrumental in our fight for progress — on paid leave and the care economy, reproductive freedom, maternal health, pay equity, and so much more.
The practice of democracy is often unpredictable, but its strength is most clear when it enables us to navigate important, pivotal questions affecting the future of our nation. Our system created the vice presidency to ensure there was a second in command at all times, to support the president, preside over the Senate, and assume the highest levels of leadership in moments of transition. The position of Vice President also enables the person occupying the role to gain the experience and have the preparation essential to being able to lead and govern at the appropriate time. Vice President Kamala Harris has thoroughly demonstrated that she is highly qualified to assume the nation’s highest office and she is ready to lead. This is her moment – and it is also a transformational moment for our nation.
The Vice President has shown tremendous leadership and skill over the past three years, whether it be advocating for the right to reproductive freedom or fighting to improve maternal health care. She has done the work day after day, both visible and behind the scenes, meeting with leaders at every level, helping to navigate complex policy questions, providing wise counsel to the president, and more. She is a proven advocate for working families, women, people of color and all of those who have too often been pushed to the margins of our society. And her ability to advocate for those who have the least means she will be a strong and thoughtful leader for all people who call America home. She has a powerful analytical mind, and through her time in the Senate she has shown an ability to interrogate the facts and seek out the truth. Having met with over 150 world leaders, she is ready for the world stage.
The Vice President has been a long time friend of the women’s movement and she is not new to politics and the business of getting things done in Washington. For this and so many reasons we are proud to support her candidacy for this nation’s highest office and we look forward to working with her to move an agenda for women’s equity forward.
